Though some readers will draw connections between the latter work and “Fourteen Days,” Preston notes there are many differences. “Porcelain War,” which follows last year’s “20 Days in Mariupol” as a Sundance documentary prize-winner that captures the war in Ukraine, was made by Brendan Bellomo and Slava Leontyev. “A New Kind of Wilderness,” about a Norwegian family living off the grid, won the jury award for world documentary. Sean Wang's “Dìdi,” a coming-of-age film about a 13-year-old Taiwanese American boy, took the audience award for U.S. dramatic film. The NEXT audience award winner was the Irish drama “Kneecap,” about a Belfast rap trio, co-starring Michael Fassbender. ___For more coverage of the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, visit https://apnews.com/hub/sundance-film-festival

The third wild film I saw at the Eccles on Friday was “Sasquatch Sunset,” a wordless comedy that follows a quartet of grunting Bigfoots as they trek through the forest for a year. Two of the Sasquatches are played, under heavy prosthetics, by Riley Keough and Jesse Eisenberg, though you’d never know it was them unless you were told beforehand. (Well, maybe some people could clock Eisenberg as the most high-strung Bigfoot, if forced to grade these performances on a sliding sasquatch scale.) What starts off as slapstick becomes weirdly moving as we watch some of the sasquatches succumb to natural disasters. In the ’90s, every independent filmmaker dreamed of launching their career at this festival as the likes of Quentin Tarantino and Steven Soderbergh had.

NEW YORK (AP) — There are rituals to an Alexander Payne movie. “The Holdovers” is Payne's attempt to make not just a ‘70-set film but an actual ’70s film, styled after some of the movies he grew up with. “I like talking about other people’s movies more than my own,” Payne shrugged. As the strike pushes into Hollywood’s awards season, it’s increasingly muting the reception for some of the best performances of the year. The first time the director Steven Soderbergh and the screenwriter Ed Solomon worked together was on the murder mystery “Mosaic” (2017), which could be watched as a choose-your-own-adventure-style story using a smartphone app or as a six-episode HBO mini-series. “Mosaic” drew mixed reviews, but the two men learned a lot doing it. The idea was greenlighted in 2021, and Solomon started writing two versions that would tell the same story differently. “When I got the schedule and I saw the number of days and the page count of just the linear, I was like, ‘This is physically impossible,’” Soderbergh said in a recent joint interview with Solomon. He added: “I had visions of ‘The Sorcerer’s Apprentice’ — that this was going to become a legendary folly.”

That combination proved perfect for the darkly comic, morally murky world of “Justified.” Olyphant’s performance in the series shifted his previously hit-and-miss career into a higher gear, which in turn has made his future prospects less dependent on the success of the “Justified” revival. Premiering Thursday on Max, the gripping six-episode serial revolves around a botched kidnapping with international repercussions. “Full Circle” was directed by Steven Soderbergh, the latest on a list of talented people with whom Olyphant long wanted to work and now has. Kenneth Lonergan made him the center of his acclaimed play “Hold On to Me Darling” (2016). “You can throw Larry David on the list,” Olyphant said, referring to his appearance as a smarmy groom in “Curb Your Enthusiasm” in 2020.

“I said sure, I’d read it right away, and I did,” Soderbergh wrote. In other hands, “Out of Sight” might not have proved to be such a game changer for Clooney, who was having a rough time making the transition from “E.R.” heartthrob to movie star. And another director might not have cast Jennifer Lopez, whose movie-star stock also rose considerably after her tough, sexy turn in the film. “Out of Sight” (streaming on Peacock) was part of a mini-bonanza of Leonard adaptations, following the success of “Get Shorty” (1995). MIAMI—Magic Mike Live is a male strip show where men take off their pants the regular way—at the ankles, not ripped down a side-seam of snaps. The full monty is not skin, but a sensitive guy talking to the crowd about consent. “Before you enter a lady’s space, you should always know that you’re welcome.”The language of empowerment and self-care is employed liberally at Magic Mike Live, a dance revue based on the 2012 movie starring Channing Tatum. Mr. Tatum and Oscar-winning director Steven Soderbergh spent $7 million to make that film, an almost-satirical look at the towel-snapping world of male strippers. Just over a decade later, Magic Mike is a more than $500 million brand that spawned two more movies, live shows with yearslong engagements in Las Vegas and London, and a multicity North American tour that recently kicked off in Miami.
The most chilling moment in Gerard Johnstone’s new horror film, “M3GAN,” comes early. Its wildly popular — and immediately viral — trailer seems to give away the entire story, beat by beat, but what it can’t convey is the picture’s delightfully oddball tone, which is poised at a peculiar juncture of slasher horror and self-aware satire. Gemma, dressed in flannels, so you know she’s an antisocial nerd, has developed M3GAN, short for Model 3 Generative ANdroid. As a character, M3GAN is a marvel of design, combining body actor (Amie Donald), voice (Jenna Davis), animatronics, makeup and special effects. (“Humanity kills every day, just to make its existence more bearable,” M3GAN cackles, presumably after doing some online reading about Apple and Foxconn’s Longhua facility.)

CNN —George Clooney has a surefire way for staying out of trouble as a public figure in the age of social media: stay off of it. Ethan Hawke, who directed Clooney in a voice role as Newman in this year’s HBO documentary “The Last Movie Stars,” observed that it’s no surprise he’s getting such a prestigious honor. “It’s interesting that he’s getting the Kennedy Center Honors this year because Newman got it too. “The default mode really doesn’t lead you to a place of thinking about fairness, or defending people who can’t defend themselves. That’s rare.”Clooney will be featured as part of the Kennedy Center Honors on December 28 at 8 p.m. on CBS.
CNN —Channing Tatum is hoping the third time’s a charm with the upcoming “Magic Mike’s Last Dance,” which debuted its steamy first trailer on Tuesday. The trilogy-completing entry in the “Magic Mike” franchise, coming a little over a decade after 2012’s first film of the same name, revisits Tatum’s stripper-with-a-heart-of-gold Mike Lane, who this time takes off to London with Salma Hayek. The teaser clip, set fittingly to Donna Summer’s classic track “Last Dance,” shows the pair in somewhat wistful moods at the outset, with Tatum bartending at a ritzy event seemingly thrown by Hayek. “Magic Mike’s Last Dance” sees the return of director Steven Soderbergh, who helmed “Magic Mike” and acted as executive producer on the second film, 2015’s “Magic Mike XXL.” It comes from Warner Bros. Pictures. (CNN and Warner Bros. are both part of the same parent company, Warner Bros.
